Using art as a way of healing the poem STRAIGHT written by Veronica Odetunde (@Wordsbyweronica) takes a new shape in a creative collaboration between Thai-Nigerian, Swedish-born poet Veronica Odetunde and Chilean photographer Futuro Berg (@Futuroberg)
The film was shot on a Saturday night, the first time the two newfound friends hung out. STRAIGHT explores the complicated relationship with afro hair. It highlights the struggle of being affected by the beauty standards and results from colonization in modern time. The set takes place in a bathtub. The water representing the element that brings afro hair back to its natural state whenever it’s been modified with, to fit in. The water also represents the water that our ancestors were shipped on during colonization.
